Nokia to use Mobile Digital Media expansion card

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.-Nokia Corp. will use Mobile Digital Media to publish its branded multimedia expansion cards for its Series 60-based handsets in the United States, the companies announced.

MDM will sell MultiMediaCard (MMC) cards in the United States for MMC-capable Nokia phones, including cards with preloaded games and music. MDM said last year it sold more than 100,000 MMC cards for Nokia phones, including promotional products such as the Jay-Z “Black” album.

“More and more consumers want to use their phones for work and fun beyond traditional voice communication,” said Brad Brockhaug, senior director of Forum Nokia. “With MDM publishing Nokia branded MMCs, we will be able to provide our Symbian/Series 60 consumers with the rich software we know they want in an easy-to-use plug-and-play format.”

And in a sign of the growing market for removable memory cards for mobile phones, MDM announced its fourth-quarter revenues increased from $1.4 million in 2002 to $6.6 million last year.

“Our sales growth in 2003 proved that our focus on high quality, branded content on SD/MMC for a wide range of mobile devices works,” said Barry Cottle, the company’s chief executive officer. “And, with our publishing agreement with Nokia, the largest manufacturer of phones with expansion slots in the world, we’ve set a great stage for the company in 2004.”
