PalmOne releases Java software

MILPITAS, Calif.-Personal digital assistant maker PalmOne Inc. released Java runtime software from IBM Corp. for its device customers. The runtime will allow Treo 600 and Tungsten users to run applications written for the Java 2 Micro Edition platform, which is widely deployed in the mobile-phone industry.

Users will be able to download the Java runtime to their devices through PalmOne’s Web site. They will also have access to a range of Java applications from Handango due to a new distribution deal between PalmOne and Handango.

PalmOne announced last year it would add Java support to its devices.

“Delivering Java to Treo and Tungsten products is just the beginning of the tremendous benefits customers will enjoy,” said Jonathan Oakes, senior director of strategy for PalmOne. “Whether it’s providing new games for consumers to pass time more enjoyably or making sure a field force always has the latest data when and where they need it, Java makes it even easier for end users and developers to tap those possibilities.”
