Verizon Wireless this week launched several sports-related offerings from its Get It Now virtual store.
The carrier is offering Play Ball!, a suite of games and applications for baseball fans. It features FOX Sports games that allow players to test their batting skills; personalized ring tones and wallpaper from ESPN’s Baseball Tonight; updates via text messaging on scores, news and standings; and live and instant replay features.
Verizon also said college basketball fans can sign up to receive text message alerts on the latest scores, news updates and trivia related to this weekend’s Final Four tournament.
Finally, the carrier said it will serve as title sponsor of this year’s Urban Challenge adventure racing series. In the race, up to 300 two-person teams attempt to decipher clues that lead them to various locations throughout their cities and eventually to the finish line. With the Verizon sponsorship, the teams will be equipped with LG’s VX6000 mobile phones powered by Verizon.
“Urban Challenge is a unique opportunity that allow us to reach consumers with a fun, participative activity that extends the Verizon Wireless experience beyond voice to data,” said Bill Stone, Verizon’s vice president of marketing.
