NEW YORK-Tele2 said it launched a GSM network in the Russian region of Chelyabinsk. The Swedish-based operator now offers GSM services in 10 out of the 11 Russian regions where it has mobile telephony operations.
Tele2 launched GSM service in its ninth region just last week.
The GSM 1800 MHz network in Chelyabinsk covers a population of 3.6 million, and the region has a mobile penetration of about 22 percent, Tele2 said.
“Our objective is to offer GSM services in all of the 11 Russian regions where we operate by the end of the second quarter,” said Lars-Johan Jarnheimer, chief executive officer of Tele2. “The Russian mobile market offers substantial growth potential for Tele2.”
