Telecom industry poised for strong growth

BOONTON, N.J.-The global telecommunications industry, including the wireless sector, this year is poised to begin experiencing growth patterns reminiscent of those enjoyed in the late 1990s, according to a new report from Insight Research.

According to the group, revenue from telecommunications services will grow at a compounded annual rate of 8 percent from 2004 to 2009, or from $1.2 billion in 2004 to $1.8 billion in 2009, reflecting the same level of growth experienced in the last boom in the sector.

Wireless communications will continue to displace wireline communications for voice calling, according to Insight’s President Robert Rosenberg, who added that an increase in wireless 2.5- and third-generation data services would further put the squeeze on traditional landline calling.

Geographically, the firm expects the fastest growth in broadband to occur in Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, with North America and Europe lagging.

Insight’s analysis also examines growing industry segments like voice over Internet Protocol, Wi-Fi and streaming media, as well as technological advances in fiber optics, DWDM and WDM, and implications for profitability and sustained growth for carriers and equipment vendors.
