SEOUL, South Korea-Although the Korean government has yet to make a decision regarding whether to mandate a wireless Internet platform for the country’s three wireless carriers, the operators plan to implement the locally developed Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability standard, regardless of the government’s decision.
According to international press reports, Korea’s mobile operators confirmed their commitment to WIPI, and the Korea Wireless Internet Standardization Forum said it will upgrade the current 2.0 version to the 3.0 platform this year.
The decision will have negative implications for Qualcomm Inc., which has been pushing its BREW wireless Internet platform. The U.S. government has stepped in, alleging that setting a single standard is a trade barrier to U.S. companies, such as Qualcomm.
