Sybase adds Dejima assets to wireless enterprise subsidiary

Enterprise software company Sybase Inc. continued its acquisition spree with the purchase of the assets of privately held wireless technology company Dejima. Sybase said it would integrate Dejima’s language processing technologies into its wireless enterprise subsidiary, iAnywhere Solutions Inc.

Separately, Sybase posted a solid first quarter, news that sent its stock up slightly to $18.17 per share.

Sybase’s purchase of Dejima follows its major acquisition of wireless enterprise rival XcelleNet Inc., which will also be integrated into its iAnywhere subsidiary.

Such consolidation appears to be increasing in the wireless enterprise space. Dejima sells technology to interpret information requests made by either voice or text, allowing users to search for enterprise information using wireless devices. Dejima counts deals with Salesforce.com and Orange.

“This move extends our Unwired Enterprise strategy and positions Sybase to play a pioneering role in the next technology wave-empowering users to easily leverage sophisticated enterprise and other information systems no matter what their level of technical expertise,” said Terry Stepien, president of iAnywhere. “With this proven, patented technology, Sybase will simplify information access, enabling companies to increase user adoption and productivity by making it easier for workers and consumers to get the right information at the right time.”

Sybase reported revenues of $183.2 million for the first quarter, up from the $181.5 million it reported in the same quarter a year ago. The company’s net income was $13.2 million, up from $13 million in the same quarter a year ago.

Sybase’s iAnywhere wireless enterprise subsidiary reported about $22 million in revenues, second only to the $168 million in revenues from the company’s infrastructure platform group.
