BOCA RATON, Fla.-Cingular Wireless L.L.C. said it has deployed EDGE technology in its South Florida market providing customers with wireless data speeds up to 170 kilobits per second and average throughput of between 75 and 135 kbps. In support of the launch, Cingular also announced the availability of the Sony Ericsson GC82 EDGE PC card as well as the previously available Nokia Corp. 6200 handset.
Cingular launched the first EDGE network in Indianapolis last June and has said it expects to launch EDGE technology in the rest of its markets over the next several months. AT&T Wireless Services Inc., which Cingular is in the process of acquiring, launched nationwide EDGE services late last year.
“Our EDGE rollout demonstrates Cingular’s continuing progress and evolution in advanced technology deployment,” said Will Schutts, executive director of network for Cingular’s South Florida region. “EDGE is currently recognized as the most economical way to overlay GSM/GPRS to achieve 3G (third-generation) capabilities, and we’re proud to be delivering EDGE-enhanced wireless data services to our customers.”
