OYSTER BAY, N.Y.-In 2004, UMTS technology is poised to grow more than 200 percent from 2003, according to a report from ABI Research.
The group notes that the growth points to the advantages of increased voice capacity at a lower cost than GSM technology, which may even overshadow the video and data capabilities. Still, GSM and EDGE are also experiencing growth, with GSM activity is up 5 percent and EDGE technology is being accepted by more than 100 service providers worldwide, said ABI.
Furthermore, according to ABI, sales and order increases are both up for the first quarter of 2004, and if the trend continues, operating income and gross marketing will be up significantly for the year, “hopefully ending what has been an extremely difficult period for the wireless industry.”
