RESTON, Va.-Nextel Communications Inc. unveiled International Direct Connect walkie-talkie service between Nextel and NII Holdings Inc. customers in the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, and between Nextel and Telus Mobility customers in the United States and Canada. Nextel and NII said they plan to launch the service in Mexico this summer.
Nextel said the international service provides the same level of performance as is currently offered with its Nationwide Direct Connect offering, including connection speeds of less than one second, and is an expansion of its current coverage in northern Baja California, Mexico, that NII Holdings launched last September.
In addition to the Direct Connect capabilities, Nextel noted its subscribers can now use select data services in the United States, Brazil, Argentina and Peru with other Nextel subscribers wherever Nextel or NII Holdings has coverage, and in the United States and Canada with Nextel or Telus Mobility customers wherever the carriers have coverage.
