Hutchison adds LG phones to portfolio

MILAN, Italy-Third-generation wireless carrier Hutchison said it will add LG Electronics Inc. phones to its 3G handset line-up, with a global agreement for 3 million LG video phones before the end of the year.

With the agreement, LG Electronics joins Motorola Inc. and NEC Corp. as a supplier for Hutchison’s international 3G subsidiaries, dubbed 3. The value of the deal was not disclosed.

The LG U8110, produced exclusively for 3, will first be available in Italy for $242. The phone includes a high-definition video camera with integrated flash, along with Java games.

Hutchison also announced GPRS roaming service between 3 Italy and rival Telecom Italia Mobile, boosting the 3G operator’s Italian footprint. The carrier said it has 3G coverage of about 63 percent of the Italian population.
