Rival groups come together on MMS interoperability

BELLEVUE, Wash.-Trade groups 3G Americas and the CDMA Development Group released technical specifications to allow GSM subscribers to send picture messages to CDMA users. The groups’ new “Americas MMS Inter-carrier Implementation Guidelines” include technical and service-level requirement guidelines for multimedia routing, MMS relay/server connectivity and multimedia charging, and will be made available to the region’s carriers.

“The technical recommendations for MMS interoperability provided by this collaboration with the CDG will help operators and vendors in the GSM and CDMA communities to deliver simple and convenient use of Multimedia Messaging services to their customers,” said Chris Pearson, 3G Americas’ president. “Though focused on the Americas, these recommendations may serve as an example for other regions of the world to follow.”

The Open Mobile Alliance issued similar technical specifications last year as part of its Multimedia Messaging Service enabler version 1.2.

Verizon Wireless, the region’s largest carrier, said it plans to review the groups’ specifications, and it could launch interoperability agreements with several carriers within the next several months.
