CDMA2000 users reach 86 million

COSTA MESA, Calif.-The CDMA Development Group said 13 million users subscribed to CDMA2000 services, including 6.6 million 1x EV-DO users, during the first quarter, for a total of 86.2 million third-generation CDMA users.

Demand for CDMA2000 1x EV-DO services is especially strong in Asia, where more than 2 million new subscribers were added during the quarter. The region has 19 CDMA2000 networks and 52 million users in 12 countries, according to the CDG. Sixty-two percent of CDMA subscribers in the region use CDMA2000, while more than 80 percent of the CDMA subscriber based in Japan and Korea use CDMA2000.

Latin America also has a growing 3G CDMA presence, with 26 CDMA2000 1x and two CDMA2000 1x EV-DO networks.
In total, CDMA subscribers increased by 13.5 million subscribers in the first quarter to reach 202 million CDMA subscribers worldwide. In the 12-month period between March 2003 and March 2004, CDMA subscribers increased 31 percent, or 43 million users, said the CDG.

In the technology’s largest region, Asia-Pacific, CDMA subscribers increased 44 percent annually to 84.4 million subscribers, according to the CDG. China, with 20 million CDMA users, and India, with 9.3 million CDMA users, contributed to the strong growth in the region.

In the Americas region, CDMA grew by 7.2 million customers during the quarter, for a total of 114.2 million users. In North America, 81.4 million subscribers use CDMA, and Latin America and the Caribbean have more than 33 million CDMA users in 20 countries.
