Primetones.com allows users to create ring tones from PC music

LOS ANGELES-Wireless start-up Primetones.com, which sells ring tones on the Internet, announced it will offer a new service that will allow mobile-phone users to create ring tones from their personal digital music collections.

Primetones.com said its new Snip ‘n Send software allows users to cut out bits of their favorite songs stored on their computers and then send those clips to their mobile phones to use as ring tones. Primetones.com said the service is available on its Web site for $1.50 per tone.

The company’s offering comes as the ring-tone business continues to expand. Indeed, several other companies, including Xingtone Inc., offer similar services that allow users to create their own ring tones from personal music collections. Such offerings are notable as they bypass the standard carrier distribution channel for ring tones and deprive record companies of their cut from ring-tone sales.

In its press release, Primetones.com stated, “neither Primetones nor Snip ‘n Send is designed or intended to foster unlawful copying of copyrighted recordings.”
