Telus Mobility said it plans to offer its customers enhanced global roaming capabilities using a pair of Motorola Inc. GSM world phones designed to leverage the carrier’s CDMA and iDEN wireless networks.
The carrier noted the handsets would include the iDEN-based Motorola i930 and CDMA-based Motorola A840 and would operate in Canada and the United States on Telus Mobility’s CDMA and iDEN networks. In addition, users of the handsets will be able to roam on GSM networks of its strategic roaming partners worldwide. Both handsets are expected to be available early next year.
Samsung Corp. is reportedly working on a similar world roaming handset for Verizon Wireless that would allow customers to use the carrier’s CDMA network in the United States as well as roam on GSM networks around the world.
