CALGARY, Alberta-Wi-Lan Inc. said it has acquired 17 U.S. patents and patent applications in its plans to produce what it calls the first WiMAX certified system. The company did not name the seller.
It also plans to strengthen its WiMAX licensing strategy.
Under the terms of the deal, Wi-Lan will pay about $3.9 million in cash and $3.6 million in shares.
“We have been negotiating this strategy acquisition for some time, and it is a real coup for Wi-Lan,” said Sayed-Amr El-Hamamsy, president and chief executive officer of the company. “.We have pre-emptively taken away our competitors’ ability to own and enforce these patents while strengthening Wi-Lan’s patent position.”
