Nokia launches PTT consultation service directed at businesses

Amid suspicion it plans to walk a lone path on the Push-To-Talk over Cellular technology, Nokia Corp. has launched a PoC consultancy service to allow operators launch PTT services for the enterprise market.

The Finnish vendor said the service is available in all the major markets where its networks business group operates.

In its service trial, this new offering, known as PoC Enterprise Market Consultancy, will allow both carriers and businesses to sample the services and workshops.

“This service is a new direct method for instant one-on-one or one-to-group communications,” said Nokia, “and can be used to enhance productivity in enterprises-for example in manufacturing, transportation and construction businesses.”

The wireless vendor said some major companies like ABB have started to see the benefits.

“We found the service trial with the enterprise to be a very effective way to show and see the benefits of push to talk in daily business,” said Esa Pigg, vice president, ABB oy Service.

Nokia is at odds with other major vendors over PoC standards, although it insists on its commitment to common standards. Other players like L.M. Ericsson, Siemens AG, Nortel Networks Ltd. and Motorola Inc. have committed to a common set of specifications.
