LONDON-Northeast Asia will dominate future growth in the public broadband market, according to a new report from the BroadGroup.
The four countries in the northeast currently host 80 percent of all hot spots in Asia. According to the report, consumerist pricing and bundling structures have “created effective barriers to further new entrants,” effectively leaving the space in the hands of telco companies.
“Future growth will occur primarily in northeast Asia,” said Philip Low, the report’s author. “Outside this area, infrastructure will continue to increase, but few, if any, players outside of the telcos have the marketing power required to create an integrated marketing approach for home and enterprise users.”
For its research, the BroadGroup surveyed 64 service providers in 15 countries, finding 17 percent were telcos, controlling more than 68 percent of all hot spots deployed, and 21 percent were mobile operators, controlling 24 percent of hot spots, leaving 40 new entrants to compete for less than 8 percent of all hot spots.
