Sprint PCS reports strong customer growth

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-Sprint Corp. reported that its wireless division added nearly 900,000 subscribers to its network during the second quarter of this year, including 505,000 direct subscriber additions, 299,000 net additions through its wholesale partners and 93,000 subscribers through its affiliates. Boosting the growth was a 15-percent increase in gross customer additions as well as a slight drop in customer churn from 2.4 percent last year to 2.3 percent this year.

The customer growth results were all ahead of second-quarter 2003 results, which included 360,000 direct and 177,000 wholesale net additions, and slightly ahead of analysts’ estimates.

Sprint also reported that average revenue per user remained flat year-over-year at $62, with nearly 6.9 million customers using its data services, which contributed more than 7 percent to second-quarter 2004 ARPU.

Net operating revenues increased nearly 17 percent from $3.1 billion during the second quarter of 2003 to $3.6 billion this year, while operating income increased 56 percent from $261 million to $407 million.
