Lucent Technologies Inc. said it will begin production and systems integration capabilities for CDMA2000 base stations for the 450 MHz band at its facility in Poland. Lucent said it will improve cycle and delivery times to its Eastern European customers by up to six days with the move. The U.S.-based vendor said it will maintain local CDMA 450 MHz product in China for the Asian market. Lucent’s Bydgoszcz, Poland, facility was established in 1993.
Alcatel Corp. has reached an agreement to buy Swiss mobile application service provider MNC, the companies announced. The acquisition will allow Alcatel to improve content delivery through multimedia messaging service, short message service, Java downloads and mobile video-based services, officials said, as well as opening Alcatel networks to hundreds of other content providers, enterprises and communities.
NTT DoCoMo Inc. said its third-generation FOMA users exceeded 5 million July 19. The carrier had 4 million 3G subscribers at the end of May. DoCoMo attributed the boost in its 3G base to its recent FOMA handset releases and its enhanced service area, including 2,000 indoor base stations.
Canadian wireless provider Rogers Wireless Inc. launched Sony Ericsson’s GC82 EDGE PC Card across its network following the recent completion of its EDGE technology deployment covering approximately 93 percent of the Canadian population. The launch follows network trials initiated late last year in the Vancouver, British Columbia, area. Rogers noted the PC card operates in both the 850 MHz and 1.9 GHz spectrum bands and is backward compatible with the carrier’s GPRS network.
Siemens AG said it will build a GSM network for Telenor Pakistan in the southern part of the country. The value of the order was not disclosed. The contract includes delivery and installation of all the infrastructure components for setting up the new network. Telenor Pakistan acquired one of the new mobile licenses in Pakistan in May.
