AWS garners third WPS contract

BASKING RIDGE, N.J.-AT&T Wireless Services Inc. signed a contract with the National Communications System to provide wireless priority services to national security officials, emergency responders and critical infrastructure industries during times of emergency. The carrier said it would begin implementing WPS on a phased-in basis beginning with Boston and the Democratic National Convention.

“The wireless priority service is a critical communications resource for national security and emergency preparedness,” said John Graves, WPS program director. “The addition of AT&T Wireless to the list of WPS carriers is an important expansion of this program, and the program office is extremely pleased to enter in this contract.”

AWS is the third nationwide carrier to garner a WPS contract following Nextel Communications Inc. and T-Mobile USA Inc. Work is reportedly under way on a CDMA-based solution for Verizon Wireless and Sprint PCS.
