STATE COLLEGE, Pa.-AccuWeather launched a premium short message service allowing mobile users to receive daily forecasts and severe weather alerts on their cell phones.
The service-dubbed Messenger and developed by AccuWeather.com in partnership with Proteus-will initially be available to customers of Cingular Wireless L.L.C., AT&T Wireless Services Inc. and Nextel Communications Inc. AccuWeather hopes to add other carriers in coming weeks.
“AccuWeather.com Messenger provides subscribers with low-cost access to severe weather warnings and local forecasts,” said Jim Candor, AccuWeather.com senior vice president. “The local AccuWeather forecasts are the most accurate from any source, and official severe weather warnings are sent to (consumers’) cell phones within seconds of issuance.”
The announcement marks the second mobile-weather application launched this week. Earlier this week, The Weather Channel Interactive and Air2Web released an updated weather-related application for Sprint PCS Vision users.
