RESTON, Va.-Nextel Communications Inc. and its affiliate Nextel Partners Inc. signed a 10-year agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority to provide wireless service at 15 TVA public utility facilities in three states. The agreement includes the installation of in-building wireless coverage and enhanced outdoor site coverage to TVA fossil and nuclear plants, facilitating communications among TVA workers, departments and plants, and is expected to encompass more than 3,000 Nextel handsets eventually.
Nextel said it began working with the TVA in September 2002 with the deployment of its customer network solutions at two pilot sites, the Sequoyah Nuclear Power Plant and the Kingston Fossil Plant, with the new agreement expanding the program to 13 additional sites in Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama.
Financial terms of the agreement were not released.
