Singapore airline to offer SMS-based check-in

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.-Singapore International Airlines customers will be able to wirelessly check in for their flights with short message service through a new agreement with VeriSign Inc.

With the launch of SMS Check-in, SIA’s frequent flyers and registered users of the airline’s Web site can use their wireless devices to check in for flights departing from 12 cities. Singapore Airlines, which said it plans to expand the service to sister airlines, hopes SMS Check-in will dramatically reduce airport wait times.

VeriSign’s Intelligent Messaging Network will provide the two-way messaging for SIA travelers.

“Working with VeriSign allows us to offer the SMS Check-in service, as well as providing flight and general information in SIA in the most convenient way using a mobile phone and PDA devices,” said Yap Kim Wah, SIA’s senior vice president of products and services. “We will continue to roll out relevant programs that fit with the lifestyles of our customers.”

Flight information, including delayed or cancelled flights, is often mentioned as a data service for which travelers would be willing to pay.
