STOCKHOLM-L.M. Ericsson and Motorola Inc. announced EDGE contracts, underlining the increasing traction of the technology in the Middle East and around the world.
Motorola said it signed its first commercial EDGE contract in the Middle East with Mobile Telecommunications Co. in Kuwait.
The network will allow the carrier to provide advanced, high-speed mobile services such as audio and video streaming, mobile Web browsing and multimedia messaging to its 1 million subscribers across the country.
“It is especially important for operators in the Middle East to differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive market and EDGE allows them to capitalize on the growth opportunities enhanced data rates will provide,” said Jeff Cherif, Motorola vice president and general manager for the Middle East and Africa region.
Ericsson said it signed a full EDGE contract with MobilCom in Jordan. The deal also includes an upgrade of the carrier’s GPRS network.
“With EDGE, we can add extra capacity to data communications, allowing our subscribers to continually enjoy the best quality currently available in Jordan by belonging to one of the most advanced mobile service providers in the region,” said Mikael Ghossen, CEO of MobilCom.
