Chinese vendors ally on 2G technology

BEIJING-With a view to doing battle with the PHS technology, a group of 11 Chinese companies have come together to promote a second-generation technology known as SCDMA, which enjoys the official support of the Ministry of Information Industry.

The technology, from which the third-generation TD-SCDMA sprouted, began as a military protocol developed by Xinwei Technology, a joint venture of Datang Telecom, Cwill Telecommunications and Bonanza Investment.

With up to 400,000 subscribers in 106 cities in 16 provinces already using SCDMA services, companies such as Datang, Xinwei, Lenovo, TCL, Amoi, Konka, Hisense and Skyworth, want to pool together their research and development resources and activities to make it an end-to-end offering from networks to devices.

“With the establishment of the alliance, we are aiming to synthesize our efforts to boost the system as well as tapping market potential,” said Datang president Zhou Huan.
