ROCHESTER, N.Y.-Eastman Kodak will acquire the imaging business of National Semiconductor Corp., which develops and manufactures metal oxide semiconductor image sensor devices.
The acquisition aims to boost Kodak’s development of sensors used in mobile-phone cameras, digital cameras and other gadgets.
Kodak will acquire intellectual property and equipment in the deal and plans to hire 50 employees who currently support the business, most of whom are based in Santa Clara, Calif. Additionally, Kodak will open a new office for the Image Sensor Solutions organization in Sunnyvale, Calif., which will be staffed by the former National Semiconductor employees.
“This acquisition demonstrates Kodak’s continued commitment to CIS products, and accelerates our longer term goal of providing CIS devices that offer the image quality of CCD sensors while still taking advantage of the power, integration and cost benefits traditionally associated with CMOS technology,” said Chris McNiffe, general manager of Kodak’s Image Sensor Solutions organization and vice president of its Display & Components division.
