Lucent continues CDMA 450 MHz push

Lucent Technologies Inc. said it has won two multimillion dollar contracts in the CDMA 450 MHz bands in Romania and Russia. The wireless supplier also unveiled a new product.

Lucent said it signed a contract with Romanian carrier Zapp to deploy a third-generation mobile data network based on CDMA2000 1x EV-DO, which will provide the carrier’s subscribers with an array of business and entertainment services. The services include videoconferencing; video messaging; the ability to download film, music, sports or news clips; Internet and intranet access; and online games, according to Lucent.

The vendor also signed a contract with Russian carrier SKYLINK in Moscow and St. Petersburg for a field trial of its CDMA2000 solution for the 2.1 GHz spectrum band.

“Lucent is the first company to address SKYLINK’s demand for a 2.1 GHz CDMA2000 solution, which can ensure a smooth and efficient path for the future development of its CDMA 450 MHz network,” said Dmitry Kamensky, general director of Lucent Technologies in Russia and CIS.

The equipment maker also announced what it called a new cost-effective, high-capacity CDMA 450 MHz base station with a reduced footprint.

The company said the new product, known as the Flexent CDMA 450 Modcell ES, has a footprint 40 percent smaller and provides the same capacity as Lucent’s previous high-capacity CDMA 450 MHz base station model.

“The Modcell ES is designed for service providers requiring a high-capacity solution to offer comprehensive coverage in high-use urban and suburban environments. It also enables NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephone) 450 MHz service providers to smoothly migrate their analog networks to advanced, third-generation (3G) networks that provide digital voice and mobile high-speed data services,” said Lucent.
