Alvarion supplies Md. library network

TEL-AVIV, Israel-Alvarion Ltd. announced it was chosen by York, Pa.-based Business Information Group for a countywide wireless broadband network installation throughout the state of Maryland.

The infrastructure will be installed mainly to support Maryland Public Libraries’ Sailor Project, which connects libraries throughout the state via a common network. This installation, which leverages Alvarion’s BreezeACCESS solution, increases the capacity of each connected county and allows for the network to be extended to various public agencies, including public safety, via a last-mile wireless broadband system.

“For fixed connectivity, we chose BreezeACCESS because it is the total package,” said John Dolmetsch, BIG’s chief information officer. “It creates a cellular architecture that uses next-generation multipoint technology from a base station to deliver high bandwidth over long ranges, around buildings and through trees. And it does this using AES encryption without any impact on throughput. The entire network eliminates the government’s need for leased lines, with payback in as short as one year, while also providing a 10-fold improvement in Internet capacity and network speed.”

Alvarion said more than $1 million worth of its network solutions has already been installed in eight counties in the state.

Also this week, Alvarion announced Serbia’s Telekom Serbia A.D. has placed a $3.6 million order for its eMGW solutions to support broadband wireless voice and data services.
