Study finds wireless Java’s popularity continues to increase

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.-Java’s popularity among mobile developers is soaring, according to a new study by Evans Data Corp.

J2ME, Sun Microsystems’ mobile version of the popular platform, is currently being used by 40 percent of mobile developers, and another 24 percent are evaluating J2ME for future use. Developers said the primary consideration in choosing a target platform was the application runtime, followed by the physical device, operating system and popularity of the device.

“J2ME’s growth can be directly attributed to widespread adoption of J2ME-capable devices in the consumer marketplace, increasing the demand for custom software,” said Jason Kaczor, wireless data analyst for Evans Data. “As this market grows, it follows naturally that more developers will create applications targeting this growing audience.”

Evans Data surveyed more than 450 wireless developers last month for the study.
