Vodafone launches Greek Wi-Fi network

MUNICH, Germany—Siemens AG said it has supplied a network of wireless local area networks for Greek operator Vodafone Panafon to allow the carrier to offer WLAN services across five countries. Vodafone customers in Greece, France, Italy, Switzerland and Portugal can use the hot spots and pay for the service on their regular mobile bills.

Vodafone Group plc has been cautious about entering the Wi-Fi market, but Siemens said preparations are under way to incorporate additional Vodafone subsidiaries into the network.

Vodafone rival T-Mobile International has been aggressive about rolling out Wi-Fi service alongside its mobile offerings and has a large U.K. Wi-Fi network.

WLAN software vendor Garderos and Cisco Systems Inc. also worked on the Greek project. The system offers cashless billing and roaming capabilities with OTEnet, a Greek Internet service provider.
