PHILADELPHIA-Bell Labs said it has discovered two ways to reduce congestion and ensure smooth traffic in both cellular networks and wireless local area networks.
In a paper titled, “Network Deformation: Traffic-Aware Algorithms for Dynamically Reducing End-to-end Delay in Multi-hop Wireless Networks,” the authors demonstrate that cellular networks can adapt network size and channels to user demand.
The other paper, called “Fairness and Load Balancing in Wireless LANs Using Association Control,” the presenters show they can relieve network congestion by seamlessly shifting users from heavily loaded access points to lightly loaded ones.
“Both of the approaches described at the conference hold the promise of improving the performance, reliability and availability of wireless communications,” said Bell Labs.
