Microsoft focuses on camera-phone technology

COLOGNE, Germany-Microsoft Corp. and FotoNation Inc. are working to implement Microsoft’s Media Transfer Protocol over Internet Protocol (MTP/IP) for wireless digital cameras.

Based on FotoNation’s implementation of Picture Transfer Protocol over IP, MTP technology was created by Microsoft as a freely available and openly licensable protocol for media devices including cameras, cell phones and portable music players. The technology allows for improved content transfer speeds between PCs and devices and a simplified networking experience for wireless digital camera owners.

“FotoNation has been working on simplifying the user experience with cameras since the earliest stages of digital photography,” said Eran Steinberg, FotoNation’s chief executive officer. “By joining forces with Microsoft, we hope to bring to our customer base a rich understanding of the benefits and features of MTP while offering the protocol implementations, testing and development tools to support the technology.”
