MUNICH, Germany—Infineon Technologies AG and the Volkswagen Group announced they have developed a platform concept for wireless location-based information services for vehicles.
The platform, dubbed the “Basic Telematics Unit,” uses Bluetooth technology to route information from the subscriber identity module card in a driver’s mobile phone so all phone calls are diverted to the unit automatically. Subsequently, all incoming text messages, phone numbers or names of callers appear on the instrument display panel in the car. In addition, the driver can dial out via voice input or by using controls on the steering wheel. The companies said car diagnostic reports and automatic roadside assistance calls are also possible with the service.
Infineon and Volkswagen plan to market the platform to all interested car manufacturers and suppliers. “Only a holistic approach will guarantee the car becomes a stable complete system,” said Reinhard Ploss, senior vice president and general manager of the automotive and industrial group at Infineon. “Closer cooperation between all automotive suppliers and the car makers will bring huge benefits to all involved and build mutual understanding and know-how.”
Volkswagen plans to trial the solution in an internal fleet pilot this fall.
