Study nearly split on cell-phone TV interest

NEWTONVILLE, Mass.—A slim majority of mobile-phone users aren’t interested in watching television broadcasts on their handsets, according to a report released Monday.

The survey indicates 46 percent of U.S. cell-phone users are at least “somewhat” interested in watching television or videos on phones or other mobile devices, while 53 percent said they were either “not very” or “not at all” interested. The study, conducted by Lyra Research’s DTV View group, polled 1,300 U.S. cell-phone users.

“Concerns ranged from increasingly inconsiderate cell-phone behavior to questions about the merit of cell phone-delivered television programming—daunting hurdles for cell-phone TV marketers,” said Steve Hoffenberg, principal analyst for the DTV view report series. “The most viable audience for marketing cell-phone TV may be among younger adult age groups, who were more likely to indicate high interest.”
