Verizon Wireless offers content backup service

BEDMINSTER, N.J.-Verizon Wireless launched its Backup Assistant application that allows customers to back up their wireless handsets’ phone book to safeguard against phone loss, damage or theft and eliminates the need to manually transfer contacts when a phone is replaced or upgraded.

The FusionOne-powered offering automatically backs up a user’s phone book when it’s initially installed and then performs automatic backups when the phone is not in use on a schedule set up by the user or when information in the address book has changed. Customers can also access, edit or print their mobile-phone address books online via Verizon Wireless’ Web site with changes made online automatically synchronized to handsets.

“Our research suggests that more than 20 percent of mobile-phone subscribers in the U.S. purchase handset insurance, but this only protects the device-not the precious data inside it,” said Rick Onyon, president and chief executive officer of FusionOne. “With Backup Assistant, Verizon Wireless can now offer its customers address book protection, mobile-phone insurance, or both together for complete protection of the device and its data.”

Verizon Wireless added that the application is available through the carrier’s BREW-based Get It Now downloadable content service for $2 per month.<
