Alcatel invests in Australian W-CDMA project

SYDNEY-Alcatel Corp. announced a $5.5 million joint investment with the Australian Government in m.Net Corp., a consortium of multinationals, Australian information technology and telecommunications companies, and government and research organizations. The investment will be used to upgrade m.Net’s next-generation UMTS/W-CDMA network in the city of Adelaide.

Within the investment program, m.Net will be able to take advantage of Alcatel’s UMTS/W-CDMA technology, and the enhanced network will stimulate the development of new third-generation applications by providing Australia’s application developer community access to the latest 3G technology.

The m.Net Australia project is supported by the Australian government through the Advanced Networks Program of the Department of Communications, Information technology and the Arts. The company has built an advanced mobile network, based on 3G and wireless local area network technologies, in metropolitan and regional South Australia.
