Wavelink adds security with AirPrism buy

Wavelink Corp said it has acquired AirPrism, a wireless firm after its software heart. Both companies work in the enterprise arena, and Wavelink thinks the move will entrench it as a strong player in that market.

The acquisition will make business better for Wavelink in mobile data security, mobile diagnostics and bandwidth optimization, according Eric Hermelee, vice president of marketing at Wavelink.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Through the acquisition of AirPrism, we are extending our capabilities to meet the needs of a fast-growing enterprise market by providing a complete, integrated solution that controls, coordinates and secures the entire wireless system, from the network out to the end-user devices,” said David Bullis, CEO of Wavelink.

Hermelee said AirPrism’s products will enable Wavelink to provide the enterprise firms the ability to lock down and control devices and their data in case of the loss, theft or intrusion from unauthorized sources.

“Companies want to know where the devices are,” Hermelee commented, adding that if they cannot track lost or stolen devices, they will be able to “purge it of data or kill the device and make it unusable.”

With the software, he said companies’ devices also will be able to fix bugs on their own. He explained when the data passes through low-bandwidth networks, its software has the ability to compress and segment files to travel through those networks in spite of their bandwidth disadvantage.

AirPrism is a northern California-based company and was founded in 2002.

Wavelink was founded in 1992 as a software company focused on mobilizing applications for enterprise on the supply chains from retail to manufacturing to logistics. The company, according to Hermelee, has evolved to also include software to manage, control and secure infrastructure from a single point.

Wavelink works both in the Wi-Fi and cellular areas. In the Wi-Fi space, it configures and monitors such areas as access points, switches and routers. For cellular, it offers a mobile manager solution to secure and manage networks and devices.

Hermelee says Wavelink has more than 5,000 customers.
