TeliaSonera conducts first EDGE/W-CDMA data handover

ESPOO, Finland-TeliaSonera Finland has conducted the world’s first EDGE-W-CDMA packet data handover using equipment and terminals in a commercial network, according to Nokia Corp., which supplied the equipment.

Nokia said the carrier’s customers now have a seamless continuation of third-generation services while roaming between EDGE and W-CDMA networks. Nokia said it upgraded the Finnish carrier’s commercial network to support intersystem handovers, and the handover used the Nokia 6630 smart phone.

“It is significant that these connections were carried out in a commercial GSM/EDGE network that has been updated to support handovers from W-CDMA,” said Jan Lindgren, vice president of the TeliaSonera business team for Nokia Networks. “This clearly demonstrates that EDGE seamless coverage for 3G service delivery is complementary with W-CDMA.”
