Orange to adopt Java across European operations

LONDON-Orange S.A. will replace its current software infrastructure for its European operations with Sun Microsystems’ Java Enterprise System, Sun said.

Orange, the mobile arm of the France Telecom Group, will spend the next three years rolling out the new software in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Slovakia, according to Sun. The open standards-based software system will provide Web, portal and application services as well as network identity, availability and security.

Initial components including messaging and calendar, and Web and directory servers will be implemented to support local applications. In France, for instance, Orange will initially use WAP Gateway and Sun Cluster software for Wi-Fi and content billing projects.

“The Java Enterprise System is serious software made simple-simplified product, simplified operation and simplified price,” said John Loiacono, executive vice president of software at Sun. “The consistency of software across Orange’s European operations also means less-complex systems to maintain and build on in the future, translating to increased operational efficiencies.”
