REDWOOD CITY, Calif.-Openwave Systems Inc. announced it achieved profitability and increased license revenues in its first-quarter fiscal-year 2005 results, released this week.
Openwave reported revenues of $83.6 million, up 9 percent from the previous quarter and up 23 percent from the year-ago quarter. Net income was $957,000 for the quarter, improved from a net loss of $737,000 last quarter and a net loss of $14 million a year ago.

“This was a breakthrough quarter for Openwave,” said Don Listwin, president and chief executive officer of Openwave. “We achieved profitability and increased license revenue. We have emerged as the leading company with a client/server offering that will improve the user experience for mobile data services.”
Openwave also made several other announcements this week, in conjunction with the CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment show taking place in San Francisco:
- Nextel Communications Inc. expanded its relationship with Openwave with a solution for multimedia and text messaging on the Motorola i860 handset. The solution leverages Openwave’s Multimedia Messaging Service Center;
- Virgin Mobile USA is using Openwave’s Browser and Messaging Client and server-based software products, including Openwave Download Manager, Openwave Mobile Access Gateway and Openwave MMSC, in its Flasher V7 camera phone;
- NEC America Inc. has licensed Openwave’s Phone Suite Version 7, including the Openwave Mobile Browser V7 and Openwave Mobile Messaging Client V7 software, for integration into its new 232E High Definition Mobile handsets, which are scheduled to be available in the United States next month;
- Kyocera Wireless Corp.’s new Koi 1.2-megapixel camera phone will include Openwave’s Mobile Browser Version 6;
- Finally, Moroccan mobile operator Meditelecom launched Openwave’s Mobile Access Gateway Version 6 and Openwave Multimedia Messaging Services Center in preparation for the launch of multimedia messaging services.
