MUNICH, Germany-Indonesia’s largest wireless carrier Telkomsel and Siemens have signed a $381 million framework agreement to expand Telkomsel’s GSM network. Under the terms of the contract, Siemens will supply new network technology during the course of the next three years and install it on a turnkey basis.
The contract covers capacity expansions for both the radio and core network. Siemens will install additional base stations and upgrade the Telkomsel network with new switching technology.
“With its population of 220 million people, the world’s fourth-largest country is one of the strategic growth markets in Asia for us,” said Lothar Pauly, president of Siemens Communications.
Telkomsel currently has 13.5 million subscribers, representing a market share of more than 50 percent.
