SAN FRANCISCO-New research shows that more than half of wireless users are against the creation of a national directory service for mobile phone numbers.
According to an Internet survey of just more than 1,000 users, 53 percent said they were against the establishment of a national 411 directory. Fifty-six percent said they would opt-out of such a directory if asked.
“Only three in ten Americans support the creation of a wireless directory. And with just one in ten mobile phone users saying they would want to be listed, a wireless directory would not find immediate popularity among consumers,” said David Stark, privacy officer for TNS, which conducted the survey on a sponsorship from privacy certification company TRUSTe.
The proposed 411 directory would be a database comprising wireless mobile phone numbers provided by five major U.S. wireless carriers: Cingular Wireless/AT&T Wireless, Nextel, Sprint PCS, and T-Mobile. Verizon Wireless opposes the creation of the wireless 411 directory.
