Chinese companies make strides with TD-SCDMA phones

Two Chinese companies advanced their strategies for the third-generation homegrown protocol, TD-SCDMA, as the country prepares for a commercial launch of the technology by mid-2005.

Chongqing Chongyou Information Technology Co. has licensed the ARM processor known as ARM926EJ for TD-SCDMA phones. The company also plans to use the processor’s digital signal processor extensions to enhance the performance and support of ARM Jazelle to boost Java applications.

“The high performance provided by the ARM926EJ processor now forms a key part of our product roadmap,” said Neng Nie, director of NYIT.

ARM believes its product has overcome its initial problems with TD-SCDMA products in the country, said Jun Tan, president, ARM China.

Another company, Datang Mobile, said it has successfully demonstrated what it describes as the first TD-SCDMA video phone. The company said it uses Dilithium Networks solutions and achieves high quality with 15 frames per second and 64 kilobits per second data speeds.

The company also demonstrated features it calls “picture in picture, picture shelter” and “voice shelter.”

“In the past year, Datang Mobile has introduced a TD-SCDMA standard voice mobile, high-speed data card and a test mobile phone,” said Sun Yuwang, vice president of Datang Mobile.
