Danger claims 3B IMs via Hiptops in 2004

PALO ALTO, Calif.-More than 3 billion mobile instant messages were sent and received through Danger’s Hiptop devices last year, the developer and manufacturer said Wednesday.

Danger’s line of Hiptop handsets, which is sold through eight operators in six countries, includes the T-Mobile Sidekick II and Edge Wireless Hiptop. The phones support AOL and Yahoo! IM platforms as well as push e-mail and a portfolio of games and other content.

“Because of the Hiptop’s intuitive user interface and overall ease of use, it has become the premier mobile platform for instant messaging,” said Hank Nothhaft, Danger’s chairman and chief executive officer. “IM has clearly become a killer app for our users. And if our current growth trends continue, we will support upwards of 10 to 15 billion mobile instant messages in 2005.”
