GOTEBORG, Sweden-Icomera, a provider of wireless Internet solutions for trains, announced a $14.3 million contract with Scandinavian train operator SJ to equip its fleet with Icomera’s wireless Internet service.
The deal consists of the rollout of Icomera’s third-generation/satellite-enabled Wi-Fi service, a world’s first for the rail industry, according to Icomera. The supplier said another train operator, GNER, is currently testing the 3G system on its East Coast route in the United Kingdom.
SJ plans to roll out Icomera’s Wireless Onboard Internet Solution on its fleet of 85 trains during the summer, enabling its passengers to surf the Internet and check e-mails at broadband speeds. The new SJ service with combined 3G and Wi-Fi technology will improve the customer experience while traveling or while waiting at train stations, Icomera said.
The company said further developments will be announced in the first half of 2005.
