Cell phones deliver info on cars, houses to consumers

Two new services announced last week take advantage of cell phones as a medium for consumers to gain information on potential big-ticket purchases.

Car maker BMW will promote its upcoming 3Series line by allowing mobile users to access product information via their handsets.

The automaker has launched a “micro Web site” designed by Boomerang Mobile Media that includes photos and graphics of the 3 Series, which will launch this spring. Users can also receive updates on the line as it nears its rollout.

“By using the power of cellular marketing, BMW is taking advantage of all the virtues of traditional advertising, direct marketing, promotions and interactivity and putting them into one compelling, integrated campaign,” said Glenn Field, Boomerang’s chief executive officer.

In addition, ClearSky Mobile Media Inc. launched a nationwide service allowing mobile users to access information on real-estate listings via their handsets.

Dubbed iCODE PhoneFlyer, the application uses a short code displayed on a yard sign to deliver information for subscribers with service through Cingular Wireless L.L.C., T-Mobile USA, Sprint PCS and Verizon Wireless. The offering, which is available to real-estate agents for a monthly fee, was launched in Orlando, Fla., several weeks ago; its nationwide rollout was announced Wednesday.

“An engaging, cost-effective way to deliver instant information to potential buyers driving down the street is a universal need,” said Dean Fresonke, ClearSky’s chief executive officer. “iCODE PhoneFlyer is the perfect answer and it works today in every corner of the country.”
