ATLANTA-Cingular Wireless said it will begin selling PalmOne Inc.’s new Treo 650 smart phone for $500 with a two-year contract. The device supports Cingular’s EDGE network and sports an MP3 player, video capture and playback and Bluetooth technology.
“The future of wireless is all about fast and ubiquitous access to information and applications,” said Jeff Bradley, vice president of Cingular’s Business Markets Group. “The blend of Cingular’s Allover network’s high-speed connections, PalmOne’s full-featured, easy-to-use Treo 650, and the rich ecosystem of Palm OS applications is a winning combination for mobile professionals who need real-time access to their most critical information.”
In other device news, Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo Inc. introduced its new 700i series of W-CDMA devices. Although similar in appearance to DoCoMo’s other 3G phones, the carrier said the new series “emphasizes style and ease of use” instead of high-powered features and functions. The carrier’s new 700i series does, however, support videophone services, ring songs, ring videos, decorative e-mails, music player functions and Java and Flash technology, as well as megapixel cameras.
Finally, Siemens said it will show off a range of new handsets at the upcoming CeBIT trade show. The company said it would introduce five new handsets and six new fixed-line phones. Siemens also said it will show off a prototype device that will offer interactive TV, information and gaming, and will support the DVB-H standard for broadcast TV to mobile devices.
