SEOUL, South Korea-Four companies have announced what they describe as the world’s first UMTS/EDGE smart-phone reference design based on the Linux operating system.
The companies include Infineon Technologies Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Trolltech and Emuzed.
“The reference platform showcases many advanced 3G and multimedia services such as UMTS/EDGE dual-mode voice calls, video streaming, high-performance multimedia applications, ultra-fast Web browsing, stereo loudspeaker and 3D audio and Java-based 3D gaming,” said the companies.

Samsung and Infineon will demonstrate the platform at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, next week.
The announcement highlights the increasing profile of the Linux operating system, which research firm Zelos Group expects to secure a significant share of the feature and smart-phone segment market in the next design cycle.
The platform consists of Infineon’s UMTS dual-mode protocol stack, Samsung’s Linux kernel and drivers by Montavista, Trolltech’s platform for Linux-based phones and Emuzed’s audio and video applications, according to the companies.
