CANNES, France-The GSM Association announced the winners of its 2005 GSM Association Awards during its gala at the 3GSM World Congress.
Brazil won the GSM Association Chairman’s Award for country leadership. Brazil counts more than 22 million GSM subscribers, and GSM is expected to become the country’s top mobile technology this month. The award was established 10 years ago to recognize outstanding contributions from an individual or organization to the development of the GSM standard worldwide.
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. took top honors in the best mobile handset category for its SGH-D500 model. Motorola Inc.’s Razr V3 was the runner-up in that category.
Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications won the best 3GSM handset category with its Sony Ericsson V800/Vodafone 802SE model. The runner-up in that category was Sharp Telecommunications with its SH902.
Vanu Inc. won the best network infrastructure category.
Other winners include:
- Swisscom Mobile Ltd. won the best enterprise application category for its Mobile Unlimited 3GSM/GPRS/WLAN data service with three-in-one card;
- Globe Telecom Inc. of the Philippines won the best mobile messaging service category for its G-Cash m-commerce service;
- Somethin’ Else of the United Kingdom won the best mobile entertainment content or service category for its Mobile Radio: hit40uk;
- LHS won the best billing or customer care solution for its KampusCell prepaid service deployed with Turkcell;
- Telecom Development Company Afghanistan Ltd. won the best marketing campaign category;
- M1 of Singapore won the best broadcast commercial category;
- America Online Inc. won the best use of mobile/special needs category;
- Ericsson AB won the best use of mobile/emergency situations category; and
- Safaricom of Kenya won the mobility in the environment award.
